Storms caused severe damage in large parts of Germany during the night. Hundreds of police and fire department operations were called out, particularly in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony and Saxony.
In parts of Upper Bavaria and Swabia, the police reported flooded cellars, flooded streets and traffic disruptions due to fallen trees. In the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Telgte, east of Münster, a tornado-like storm caused severe damage in an industrial park. According to the town, trees fell, buildings were damaged and roads had to be closed.
The German Weather Service (DWD) says it is investigating whether it was actually a tornado. In Leipzig, parts of the city were flooded on Friday afternoon. Whole streets were under water after heavy rain. Cellars, underground car parks and even a kindergarten were flooded. In some cases, trams could not move and had to turn back.
